The diabetes association diet is a healthful eating program that is naturally high in nutrients and can facilitate in controlling the levels of blood sugar in the body. By making use of the American Diabetes Association’s diabetes exchange lists and forming a balancing diet, you are guaranteed to get the right amount of carbohydrates, calories and other important nutrients.

Following a diet plan for diabetes sufferers does not have to be difficult. You must talk to a licensed dietitian in order for you to know the details about the diabetes exchange program and be certain that you are eating the right kinds of foods.

How do the diabetes exchange program works?

With the diabetes exchange program, the foods are categorized into basic kinds such as fruits, meat, milk and starches. Every category has the quantity of different foods that you can consume and the quantity of carbohydrates, calories and further nutrients. Most food items within a category can be replaced for another item that contains the same nutrient content and the same way that they influence the levels of blood sugar.

With the help of your dietitian, they can be able to know how many daily replacements will be effective based on your requirements. Also, you need to work with them to know how to proficiently spread the replacements all over the day in order to stabilize the levels of you blood sugar.

The Meal Programs that Work

Though you have diabetes, you need not follow a more intricate meal program or start eating “diabetes-exclusive” foods. Primarily, it only means that you need to consume various kinds of foods in control and stick to normal meal periods.

Your meal program must include a diet rich in fruits, whole grains and vegetables. Instead of following a limited diet, a healthy meal plan for diabetes includes consuming foods that are naturally affluent in nutrient, but low in calories and fats. Eating at regular times all over the day must as well be a top priority in order to help your body regulate blood glucose levels.

The Meal Plan

A good way to obtain positive outcome in your meal plan is to start a habit for eating meals and choose healthful food items in proper amounts. If you adhere to your plan and be cautious of your serving amounts, you will roughly eat the same carbohydrates and calories each day. If you make a variation on what you eat and when you eat them, it will be difficult to manage your blood glucose and you’ll notice level differences all over the day.

Best Options for Planning your Meal

Consuming healthy carbs is of great significance particularly if you are suffering from diabetes. Opt for complex carbs like fruits, dairy products that are low fat, legumes and whole grains.

In addition, fiber is a top priority in controlling the blood glucose levels. You must be able to consume 25-30 grams of fiber every day from foods like fruits, legumes, nuts, wheat bran, whole wheat flour and vegetables.

By implementing a healthy diabetes association diet, you can definitely control the levels of your blood sugar and avoid complications that diabetes may bring about. Be creative and seek for encouragement from other people who have the same diabetes meal program as yours.

The symptoms of a brain tumor are often similar to many other diseases. While experiencing these symptoms are not cause for alarm, you should have them checked by a doctor. The symptoms of a brain tumor can easily be mistaken for any number of diseases. Early detection is your best chance for survival.

Headaches

Headaches are the most common initial symptom. Generally, brain tumor headaches start out the worse in the morning, getting better as the day continues. They can sometimes be so painful that they rouse a person from sleep. After wakening, the person may vomit and then feel better. Headaches often worsen with exercise, coughing, with a change in position from kneeling or bending. These headaches typically don’t respond to the usual headache remedies.

Not that a headache is by any means conclusive of brain cancer. Talk to your doctor. It may be the kids driving you crazy. It may be something more serious. Have it checked out to be safe.

Mental or Other Personality Changes

You may experience problems with memory, especially short term memory, speech, communication or have concentration issues. You may face severe intellectual problems that are followed by dull confusion. You may experience changes in behavior, temperament and personality, depending on the location of the tumor.

Seizures

About 1/3 of those carrying brain tumors don’t even realize it until they’ve had a seizure, a very common symptom of a brain tumor. They are caused by an interrupted flow of electricity to the brain, causing convulsions, unusual sensations and possible loss of consciousness. You may also experience focal seizures, such as a brief muscle spasm, feeling of tingling or interrupted speech problems.

Focal Symptoms

More specific focal symptoms also occur and can often be used to identify the location of the brain tumor. These include hearing ringing or buzzing sounds or complete hearing loss, decreased muscular control, lack of coordination, decreased sensation, weakness, difficulty with walking and speech, and double vision.

Mass Effect

Mass effect is caused by the increased pressure of the tumor. It swells the brain, causing it to accumulate a soft liquid. It can be observed by an eye doctor when he/she checks your eyes. When it develops, prompt treatment is required to avoid serious consequences.

When you are suffering from an adverse health condition, especially a severe illness or disorder, you should seek immediate medical attention. However, even when you do that, doctors’ negligence can result in delayed treatment. During this time you can become even sicker and perhaps past the ability to even respond to treatment.

On the other hand, there is a thin line between waiting for a second opinion and delayed treatment. In some cases, if you are misdiagnosed, the treatment that you receive for your supposed condition can be dangerous no matter if you receive it immediately or if it is delayed. Thus, when you are diagnosed with a serious health condition, you should always consider taking the time to get a second opinion rather than push forward to get treatment as soon as possible.

Once you are sure of your diagnosis, though, you should receive the proper treatment immediately. Doctors undergo years of education and training so that they can correctly identify disorders and prescribe the proper care. This is important because some powerful treatments, like chemotherapy or strong antibiotics, can weaken your body even as they attack the source of your problem.

Thus, you can suffer from delayed treatment if a doctor fails to recognize your disorder. Additionally, if a medical facility refuses to take you, it can cost you time in getting the treatment you need. Lastly, if you go to the emergency room for treatment, the nurses must correctly triage your injuries and determine if you actually need emergency treatment or not. In cases like this, if you are sent to the wrong unit, it can also take more time before you are treated.

Delay in treatment may not be too dangerous in the case of something like a mild cough or cold. Often, these are caused by viruses that can’t be treated with medication. However, with more serious issues such as strokes and brain trauma, the few hours of delay in getting treatment can result in permanent health issues. For instance, if you hit your head and the doctor diagnoses brain trauma, he should monitor the swelling inside and perhaps administer medications or even perform surgery to keep the blood from pooling up inside your skull. The problem with pooled blood is that it puts pressure on your brain. Prolonged pressure can kill off areas of brain tissue, resulting in lifelong brain damage.

This type of care is based on the understanding that the nervous system affects all parts of the body. Most notably, the spine houses the spinal cord, which is connected from your feet to your head. The root word “chiropractic” (or Chiropraktikos) means “effective treatment by hand“. Chiropractors find and make adjustments to problems related to the body’s musculoskeletal system (also called subluxations in the spine). Instead of using drugs or other chemicals, chiropractors seek to treat the body by making minor adjustments to the spine to improve health and overall well being.

Chiropractors generally use a standard method for diagnosing issues related to the musculoskeletal system, but there may be differences in how they treat the patient. Some may do more than an adjustment. Spinal stretching, heat, cold, and other treatments can be used effectively in addition to spinal manipulation to speed the healing process.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

The spine is a strong set of bones in the body, but due to falls, stress, tension, overexertion, and other injuries, the alignment of the spine can slightly get out of place. Chiropractic care is beneficial in that it can help speed the body’s natural healing process and correct these issues with little discomfort from the patient.

Some of the main benefits are:

  1. Increased Circulation – your body requires proper circulation of blood in order to heal cuts, bruises, and other ailments. Chiropractic care can help blood to circulate within the body.
  2. Increases delivery of oxygen and other nutrients – Much like blood, certain areas of the body require vitamins and other necessary nutrients to heal or operate normally.
  3. Reduce soreness and pain – Chiropractors can help narrow down where the pain is coming from and treat specific areas of the spine to reduce soreness and speed healing
  4. Helps the body to relax – The human body is an amazing organism. With time nearly all ailments can heal. Chiropractic care can act as a catalyst and speed the healing process by helping the organs and muscles to relax so that healing can take place.

There are many more benefits to chiropractic care including easier breathing, better athletic performance, increased nervous system performance, and overall a healthier you. If you have not talked with a chiropractor before and you are experiencing any type of pain, soreness, or other health related issue, it may be time to look up a local chiropractor in your area and talk to him or her about your health-related goals.

How to stop bedwetting is a question that has worried, confused and upset generations of parents. Unfortunately, a great many young children will suffer from bedwetting at some stage in their lives. This can leave their parents wondering how to cope with the problem, known in medical circles as enuresis. For a child, making the transition from wearing a nappy to sleeping without one can be difficult and therefore this is a prime time for many ‘little’ accidents to occur. However, there are ways to resolve these problems whilst the child gets used to the regime of potty training.

First of all, telling off the child is really not a good idea. The very fact that they have wet the bed means they have lost control and were unable to wake up in time to visit the toilet. As stress is considered a prime trigger that can cause a child to wet the bed, scolding them for doing it will very probably make things worse not better. Other possibilities do exist however, an underlying medical issue or infection can also cause enuresis.

A nice and simple way of helping children to naturally stop bedwetting is to encourage them to visit the toilet last thing at night before bed. Make sure you consider how old your child is though; regressing back to nappies in the short term can work if you are currently trying potty training. Older children can also start wetting the bed and in this situation you may need to try other methods such as reducing any fluids they have not long before they go to bed. Different children will respond to different methods, so keep trying if you don’t succeed the first time.

Make sure you keep an eye on your child to watch for physical symptoms which could trigger the bedwetting so they can also be resolved. For example, if your child is experiencing any discomfort while urinating, that could be indicative of some kind of infection. If it is an infection, normal toileting habits should be resumed once the infection has been successfully treated. In other situations bedwetting alarms work well; the child will be woken if they do wet the bed.

In the end a positive attitude is highly beneficial to the child, regardless of why the bedwetting may have started. Matters can be made even worse if the parents are negative about it and transfer those feelings onto the child, who is probably already feeling upset about it. Almost certainly they will want to stop bedwetting as much as you want them to stop.

In the vast majority of cases this problem can be solved, so remember there is a lot you can do to successfully put an end to the situation. Fortunately, it is not usually a long lasting affliction, sooner or later most children will stop bedwetting and sleep without any further problem.

Sleep contributes a lot to the success of a stroke patient’s rehabilitation program. Brain scientist and former stroke patient, Jill Bolte Taylor reveals this in an interview with Caring.

Taylor contradicts the methodology of most rehabilitation facilities wherein stroke patients are kept awake through medication or through activities that depended on therapists’ schedule despite the patient’s tiredness. Taylor’s treatments stopped when she was tired and began when she was ready for it, regardless of the time of day or night.

This proves that stroke rehabilitation programs’ effectiveness rely on the capability of the human body to absorb information in a given day especially when the brain is not functioning properly.

APPLYING THE BENEFITS OF SLEEP TO STROKE PATIENTS

1. Sleep helps the brain consolidate memories Harvard Medical School’s Dr. Jeffrey Ellenbogen tested whether sleep helps build and maintain memory and overcome interference. Results showed that sleep is not a state of mental inactivity for it actively helps the brain digest memories such as those from recently learned facts or working memory. Participants who did not sleep between learning and testing recalled less of the new words they learned than those who slept. Sleeping in between therapy ,then, allows the stroke patients to absorb information derived during their rehabilitation.

2. Sleep strengthens the brain Various psychologists during the 84th Annual Convention of the Western Psychological Association presented the benefits of Random Eye Movement (REM) Sleep, which occurs between the 6th and 8th hour of sleep when dreaming begins. REM sleep produces sleep spindles that allow the brain to store new information into long-term memory. Sleep spindles are one- to two-second bursts of brain waves that rapidly wax and wane at strong frequencies. The brain, while in REM sleep, transfers short-term memories in the motor cortex to the temporal lobe, to become long-term memories. Sleep spindles are transmitted as the temporal lobe makes sense of the new information and stores it in long-term memory. In this process, neurotransmitters essential to remembering, performance, and problem-solving are replenished by the brain. Sufficient sleep strengthens and recuperates the brain to overcome common problems like short attention spans. Stroke patients can also be given Neuroaid to expedite recovery of neurological functions.

3. Sleep decreases risk for another stroke Patients with diabetes and high blood pressure who suffered stroke may decrease the risk of another stroke by increasing sleep in their regime. According to Dr. Eve Van Cantor, professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, lack of sleep increases risk for diabetes and high blood pressure to become less susceptible to medication.

Scientific research has proven the effects of sufficient sleep (8 hours) to the human body, to behavior, and to society as a whole. This is why sleep should be interspersed in a stroke patient’s rehabilitation program, even if this means incorporating more hours of sleep. The length of time is irrelevant. Patience is a real virtue that reaps great rewards like the 8-year recovery of Jill Taylor.

The inflammation of joints and sometimes muscles that is arthritis is a source of immeasurable trouble for those who suffer it. In fact, to point out exactly what the cause of it is itself difficult. What is easy is the accepting the reality that pain can simply change your life into one long nightmare. Look at the following tips and follow them. Whatever the cause of your strain of arthritis, you will definitely reap benefits from these tips.

- Aspirin can help ease the pain as well as reduce the swelling. The good thing about aspirin and other non-steroid drugs is that they come with fewer side effects. You can try mefenamic acid also or naproxen

- Flexcerin is another very effective solution for your pain. It also comes void of the many side effects that are associated with arthritis medication. It in fact aids in the rebuilding of destroyed tissue. It lubricates joints and soothes the swelling.

- Avoidance of carrying heavy weight is encouraged to discourage the erosion of the afflicted areas.

- Try to lose weight if you reckon you are heavier than you should be. Being a disease of joints, how much those joints carry could literally spell out how much pain has to be borne.

- It is also about now that you start to keep off avoidable stress. Pain is stress on its own and work or family should now work to make you comfortable not stressed.

- Rest often and do only little work.

- Check the size and nature of shoes when you go shopping. Keep them flat and comfortable. Don’t allow any pinching in your shoe.

- At all times, keep your feet dry and warm. Arthritis feels like pain is literally biting especially when the paining part is cold too.

- Smoking and alcohol are the first ones that should go. Keep off fatty foods too.

- Cod-liver is good oil in pain relief, helping the rebuilding of the torn tissue and bone as well as reducing the stiffness.

- Since gluten is known to do more harm, avoid barley and wheat.

- Thera-putty is made to be squeezed by the patient who has swollen fingers. Chime balls are also good exercise especially if used in pairs. These help strengthen finger joints.

Follow the tips above and set your mental attitude to the reality that pain can and will be managed. While it is not possible to cure arthritis, it does not mean that you cannot enjoy your life. It actually means that with the right response to pain, you can have as much a life as you are willing to allow yourself.

Everybody’s looking for a fast acne treatment, only they’re looking in the wrong places. They may consult a skin doctor or try over the counter products, or perhaps they may try one of those infomercial acne products that we see on TV. All of these acne treatments only treat the skin and not the real problem.

Treating the root cause of acne is the only real cure for acne, but most people don’t know about this type of cure. It’s really no wonder because the big pharmaceutical and marketing companies don’t want everyone to know that we don’t have to keep using their ineffective products.

Do some commercial acne products work? Well, some work up to a point, but until you’re got your insides in order, you’re still going to have break outs, sorry to say. And commercial acne products often have pretty bad side effects, they irritate and make the skin red. Sometimes we look worse than we did before, it’s enough the drive you nuts.

Natural fast acne treatments work by going to the heart of the problem and removing it. There are quite a few internal issues that may need to be dealt with in order to clear up your skin but once you’ve found the problem and removed it, it’s gone and the results are so fast and amazing that they will astonish you.

Everyone that has acne has a problem going on inside their intestines, they are inflamed and harmful things are moving into our bloodstreams trying to get out…they break through onto the skin. We may have an undiagnosed food allergy, this is very common. Many times it’s wheat and/or dairy which are contained in so many of the foods that we eat. But, just removing those foods items isn’t enough, we also need to detox the system completely to see a fast cure. We need to get our hormones back into balance and get our oil glands under control.

Other issues may be heavy metals in the system, which is very common in urban areas. We may be having problems from the beverages that we’re drinking. What we have to do is educated ourselves on detoxing that’s specific to acne problems. When we discover what’s wrong and zero in acne doesn’t stand a chance and we’ll see great results within days.

Acne is a serious blow to our self esteem. People with clear skin are happier, more attractive to the opposite sex, do better in school, and make more money than people with bad skin. It’s very important that we start clearing up our complexion for a much better quality of life.

What is Crohn’s disease?
Crohn’s disease is an ongoing disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive tract, also referred to as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Crohn’s disease can affect any area of the GI tract, from the mouth to the anus, but it most commonly affects the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum. The swelling extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The swelling can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea.

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease, the general name for diseases that cause swelling in the intestines. Because the symptoms of Crohn’s disease are similar to other intestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis, it can be difficult to diagnose. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. In Crohn’s disease, all layers of the intestine may be involved, and normal healthy bowel can be found between sections of diseased bowel.

Crohn’s disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn’s disease have a blood relative with some form of inflammatory bowel disease, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child. Crohn’s disease can occur in people of all age groups, but it is more often diagnosed in people between the ages of 20 and 30. People of Jewish heritage have an increased risk of developing Crohn’s disease, and African Americans are at decreased risk for developing Crohn’s disease.

Crohn’s disease may also be called ileitis or enteritis.

What causes Crohn’s disease?

Several theories exist about what causes Crohn’s disease, but none have been proven. The human immune system is made from cells and different proteins that protect people from infection. The most popular theory is that the body’s immune system reacts abnormally in people with Crohn’s disease, mistaking bacteria, foods, and other substances for being foreign. The immune system’s response is to attack these “invaders.” During this process, white blood cells accumulate in the lining of the intestines, producing chronic inflammation, which leads to ulcerations and bowel injury.

Scientists do not know if the abnormality in the functioning of the immune system in people with Crohn’s disease is a cause, or a result, of the disease. Research shows that the inflammation seen in the GI tract of people with Crohn’s disease involves several factors: the genes the patient has inherited, the immune system itself, and the environment. Foreign substances, also referred to as antigens, are found in the environment. One possible cause for inflammation may be the body’s reaction to these antigens, or that the antigens themselves are the cause for the inflammation. Scientists have found that high levels of a protein produced by the immune system, called tumor necrosis factor (TNF), are present in people with Crohn’s disease.
