Suicide carries with it a profound series of serious consequences, which often changes the lives of everyone around that person. We all know those drastic effects. What is often overlooked or chalked up to being a sad occurrence, are the pre-suicidal circumstances, which actually increase suicide rates, and probability of, that disaster. Suicide prevention is the goal of thousands of professionals when a depressed patient makes the issue recognizable.

But, what happens to the large numbers of suicidal candidates who show no suicide warning signs nor openly communicate their deepest thoughts of suicide? Certainly, not all depressed people contemplate taking their own life, at least won’t admit it. Wedged in between the person who is depressed and their choice of death by suicide by that person is a trigger of some type that changes the thought of suicide into a planned commitment.

The danger related to suicide that can and will increase suicide risk can be anything that may be intentional or unintentional and words or actions by others, even lack of supportive remedies. Medications may reduce the tone of the dilemma but may not actually alter the decision about suicide at the time it’s made. It must be the greatest frustration for all mental health providers when they try to alter the course of events and fail.

One dangerous and destructive facet of efforts for suicide prevention that increases the risk of suicide is the perception that a suicidal person is not only dangerous to themselves, but also dangerous to others around them. As a result, a potentially suicidal patient, as determined by a psychiatrist or other qualified mental health professional, becomes a victim instead of a patient.

Just imagine a situation where a person truly is suicidal and surrounded by those who want to help. But, instead, those standing there see the person as a highly potential homicidal person to be reckoned with. This happens in reality to American military veterans being treated for mental illness of one type or another by the Veterans Administration physicians. In fact, when the civilian armed police (usually four) show up at the VA mental health clinic, they are quick to quote the legal statutes that mandate their action.

How would that make you feel if you were being treated for depression at the VA mental health clinic, went there for help one day, then were physically forced into a lockup institution immediately for a minimum of three days, with the doctor’s option to keep you for many more days? Most veterans probably never heard of that law, nor understood that they could be physically confined involuntarily to a psychiatric facility. Most understand that it occurs with alcoholics and drug addicts commonly known to harm others, but to suicidal patients bent on harming only themselves…….incredibly cruel punishment.

Mind you, this unlucky individual was not armed nor threatening anyone. He just needed counseling.

The three keywords that trigger this confinement are those elicited during the scripted questions psychiatrists ask depressed patients to screen them, like these:

1. Do you have a weapon at home? Yes (Who doesn’t-a knife in the kitchen drawer, the rifle your uncle gave you for hunting, a rope in the shed for hanging, etc.)

2. Have you thoughts about suicide? Yes (depressed patients intermittently think about suicide off and on for years, depending on the depth of their depression.)

3. Have you planned how you would commit suicide? Yes (Your answer would reveal which method you would use if it ever came to that—most probably have thought of it)

Answering these three questions with three “Yes’s” will get the veteran involuntarily confined. Many extraneous factors influence the psychiatrists decision about that person, which are often enough to avoid triggering the confinement-but are totally disregarded intentionally, are not considered at all, are not going to change the mind of the psychiatrist no matter what, and are indicative of a second rate physician who barely made it through medical school.

Take that depressed person suddenly into lockup, and it results is additional significant increased mental trauma, which exaggerates the depression and increases suicidal risk. Anyone who has a brain must understand it happens in every single person treated in the same manner to some degree.

What are the additional traumatic conditions added by confinement:

a. Isolation-no friends, patients there keep to themselves, rare staff attention, lack of family support and attention, controlled phone calls outside.

b. Controlled environment-complete loss of self-esteem, hopelessness, boredom, group counseling usually about a topic not pertinent to the patient’s situation.

c. Physical disintegration-loss of appetite, decreased care about cleanliness, reduction of physical activity with sleep used as an escape.

d. Incompetent staff-especially psychiatric social workers who are making decisions and diagnoses far above their competency and training. They are the cause of many patients being kept well over the usual three days—for extra counseling this staffer has decided the patient needs because patients are sicker than everyone else can see.

e. Mental confusion-forget time and date, concern about what family will think and how they’ll treat them later, increases the isolation feeling, future worries about what this episode will do to jobs, life pattern, and medical treatment.

f. Increased desire for suicide-all of the above increase the desire to escape life and treatments, elicits fear of ever going back to the VA clinic for mental help for fear that it could happen again, have disappointed family and deserve punishment, worthlessness becomes supreme.

This patient, once confined, is now permanently labeled by the VA as a violent person on the records, even if they have never performed a violent action in their life. Any history of combat experience makes it easier to label him or her.

This experience of confinement suddenly by police action insures that the veteran will need to do certain things to protect themselves, like, lie to the psychiatrist or psychologist, give up on any mental health help from the VA, alert all the other vets about the trickery.

This is the system in force now. It may be a wakeup call for other agencies who treat depression, and function in a suicide prevention format.

Communicating with children that have Asperger syndrome is not something that comes easily to most people. In fact, success requires understanding the underlying condition and how it affects the behavior of a child. By studying the underlying factors, and then putting this knowledge into play, you can have a better sense of how to relate to a child that has Asperger syndrome. Also, you will be more prepared for handling the social awkwardness and periodic tantrums.

Ultimately, success at building relationships with these children depends on showing them acceptance and tolerating any behavior that is not typical. By doing so, you will increase your rapport with the child and develop trust that will help the relationship past any difficult stages. Trust is the cornerstone of any relationship, and is especially important for developing positive interactions with children. Much of the psychological literature on Asperger syndrome or similar disorders is focused on developing such trust.

Also, you will need to understand the particular behaviors that make children with Asperger syndrome stand out from the crowd. Doing so will help you deal with such behaviors in your daily interactions. For example, because Asperger syndrome is on the autism spectrum, most children with the condition are easily over stimulated by their environment. Loud noises, crowds, and other chaotic stimuli can cause huge amounts of stress for the child. By watching for such factors and helping the child avoid such stress, you can help avoid emotional outbursts from the child.

Additionally, you should try your best to avoid changes in established routines. If you have plans with the child, stick to those plans instead of changing them at the last minute. Children with Asperger syndrome have a hard time adjusting to such changes. Changes to decorations in the home can also cause stress reactions. The child will feel much more comfortable in environments that are familiar.

A great way to strengthen your relationship with the child is to get in the habit of talking about their special interests. You will quickly realize the importance of this because the child will likely talk about these interests constantly. Asperger syndrome allows children to focus with much greater intensity than most people. Because of this, children with the condition develop very deep knowledge within their areas of interest. They are particularly good at categorizing things and analyzing systems. Therefore, many are collectors; bugs, baseball cards, trains, or anything else that is collectible will often be a key area of interest. Be sure to pay attention to these key interest areas as you are building your relationship.

Last of all, make sure that you deal with any emotional disturbances with patience and understanding. This is necessary because children with Asperger syndrome cannot always deal with negative emotions or stress in a positive way. Not paying attention to this essential factor could result in arguments and the destruction of trust that you have worked so hard to build. Avoid the urge to argue, and instead allow the child to calm down before talking about the issue.

Hopefully these tips for relating to children with Asperger syndrome will help you to build strong bonds and appreciate that the condition can be a gift as well as a challenge. Remember, the key to meeting your goals is to be understanding and patient. Also, do not forget to ask others for emotional encouragement if challenges arise.

What do you think about hypnosis? Maybe you’ve seen a stage hypnotist who gets people up on stage and gets them to perform crazy tricks to entertain the audience. These shows are very carefully staged. Some stage hypnotists plant friends in the audience to make sure that they are able to put on a show.

Others are less dishonest. They are very smart at picking people who are going to be highly suggestible. They will probably ask the audience in general to do certain things – like locking your hands together. Based on the response, they will pick their victims. Then peer pressure takes over and the show begins.

Hypnotherapy is completely different from this. Hypnosis is really nothing more than a state of compete relaxation. There is nothing mystical, or mysterious, or scary about being hypnotised. Almost anyone can be hypnotised if they want to be. And that’s the kicker. You need to want to be hypnotised. But given that it is a wonderfully empowering experience, why would anyone want to deny themselves?

Some people fear that they will somehow lose control if they allow themselves to become hypnotised, but that won’t happen. Another fear is that you will not be able to come out of trance. Again, this can’t happen. You remain in control at all times, and while suggestions made during hypnosis are very powerful ways of bypassing your critical conscious mind they are only suggestions. You decide whether to follow them or not. Despite what you may have seen on the movies, no-one can hypnotise you to do something which goes against your basic values.

Where hypnosis is really powerful is in helping to deliver behavioural change, by reinforcing positive messages in your sub-conscious mind. If you want to achieve change, you need to impress both your conscious and subconscious mind. Your conscious mind is a very powerful critic. So no matter how much you tell yourself something, if your conscious mind doesn’t believe it, then it simply won’t get through to your subconscious mind. So if you are trying to stop smoking, and you believe at any level that you have tried and failed in the past, then you will almost certainly fail again this time. That’s what your subconscious believes, so that’s what it will deliver. Hypnosis works by getting past the conscious mind and talking directly to the subconscious, letting you break through your limiting beliefs, replacing them with the positive belief that you will be successful this time.

So can hypnosis work for stopping smoking? You’d better believe it!

It has been found Type 2 diabetics can also react to gluten not just people with known Celiac disease. This is really interesting as, worldwide wheat is regarded as the staff of life. Bread is eaten at every meal and between regular meals, and wheat flour is mixed with almost every other food.

Gluten is found in foods containing:

  • wheat
  • oats
  • rye
  • barley
  • pasta
  • cereal,
  • beer and
  • spelt

About 1 in 100 people, however, has a severe reaction to the gliadin lectins in the gluten proteins that give wheat it’s ‘stretchability’. And there is a growing belief among scientists that activating the genes for gluten sensitivity, also known as Celiac disease, does not cause disease. Instead, Celiac disease activates the genes associated with it.

In full-blown Celiac disease, the “villi,” absorbing pockets lining the intestine, are destroyed by inflammatory processes. The destruction of the intestine keeps the toxic gliadin from entering the body.

The symptoms of Celiac disease occur after the immune system learns to recognize proteins in wheat and to attack them with a inflammatory substance known as interleukin-15. However, even people who do not develop severe symptoms of the disease, some scientists believe some people secrete smaller concentrations of this compound, just not enough to make them obviously sick.

In subclinical Celiac disease, the lining of the intestine is merely inflamed. This makes it far more permeable to glucose, and far more glucose enters the bloodstream after a meal. Although this effect by itself will not automatically result in Type 2 diabetes, it can accelerate the progress of metabolic syndrome to Type 2 diabetes and make controlling blood sugar levels much more difficult for people who already have Type 2 diabetes.

Reactions to wheat are more clearly identified in people who have LADA, an adult-onset form of diabetes that is essentially Type 1 diabetes that only manifests itself in adulthood. Researchers at the National Institute of Endocrinology in Cuba, however, have learned that Type 2 diabetics also react to gluten.

If you have Type 2 diabetes, see if your symptoms don’t get better if you avoid wheat for a period of two weeks. You don’t have to start reading labels. Just don’t eat bread made from whole wheat or white flour and don’t eat baked goods made with any kind of wheat. If you must eat bread, try the 100% rye bread you can get in the refrigerated section at most supermarkets… many people can tolerate rye but not wheat. Then, if you get an unexpected improvement in your blood sugar level control and the way you feel, try avoiding wheat products long-term. This method costs you nothing, and may leave you feeling much better.

A gluten free diet may just improve your health all round with the advantage of lower blood sugar levels.

Whiplash? Car accidents are the leading cause. While whiplash injuries are often sustained in car accidents, this is hardly the only culprit.

Here are some other notable causes of whiplash and neck injuries:

- Bicycles
- Skiing
- Horseback riding
- Motorcycles
- Skateboards

Visualize this if you will. You’re riding along leisurely on your bicycle, in the specified bicycle lane, on a clear day. The road is clear of traffic and you are no more than 10 minutes from home. Life is good, you think to yourself. Seemingly out of no where, a car swerves into your lane. You aren’t riding very fast, but nevertheless are compelled to clamp down on the brakes.

In addition to this, you are forced to let your feet drop down to the road, to avoid being tossed from your bike. Your torso is violently snapped forward and back. Fortunately, your reflexes get you safely out of the car’s path and you are able to make it to the side of the road. However, you notice a dull ache in your neck. After about 10 minutes, the dull aches evolves into shooting pain moving from your neck down to your shoulders. You wisely go to the hospital, where you are diagnosed with a somewhat mild case of whiplash. Cars accidents and collisions are the usual suspects, but not in this case.

Shaken baby syndrome is another unfortunate cause of whiplash. This is when a small child, usually 5 years or younger is shaken violently. It creates the same sort of sudden acceleration/deceleration movement that a collision in the rear of a car does.

Symptoms of whiplash include:

- Stiffness in neck and or shoulders. difficulty in turning the head in one or either direction
- Neck pain. Mild or sharp. Shooting pain traveling down towards torso
- Headaches
- Memory loss
- Blurred vision
- Irritability. Unable to concentrate. Mood swings

Once whiplash is diagnosed, get medical care and treatment. The above mentioned symptoms do not always show up right away. Shrugging this injury off can lead to debilitating, life-long pain and needless suffering. Not to mention, missed days from work and sky high medical bills.

The most frequent cause of whiplash injuries are car accidents. This is the undisputed king of personal injury claims brought against insurance companies. Millions of people have sought compensation for this injury. No question about it.

OK, so you didn’t injure your neck in a car. Whiplash, as pointed out above can happen in a multitude of ways. Because you hurt your neck while skiing, doesn’t mean it should be dismissed as something else. Whatever the cause, get a full medical report and if need be, seek whiplash compensation.

There are people which convince themselves that if they cannot deal with something surely there must be highly trained specialists who can. These people believe that the specialist can take up where they leave off and fix what nobody can fix. With that theory in mind, they commit the child with Autism and go off to live their ‘normal’ lives.

One of the theories that so called experts have is that children with Autism can not assimilate or respond, basically they just mimic. This is very much like saying children with Autism are broken and can not be fixed.

Have you ever heard the saying, we learn by doing? Even average children, it is being discovered cannot learn unless they are first taught to mimic their parents. It seems all it is, is a different structured brain to do the job.

Another situation to look at is the person that lives a rather dull life, no crime, no arrests, and no tickets. Intelligence seems to be average on above, they marry, have children, and then one day in a normal length of life, they die. This person ends up on the autopsy table and it is discovered this person does not have a brain like everyone else, but instead has a lattice work brain.

Not noodle like or jelly like but like zigzags of tissue forming structure. ‘Potato chip brains’ is the term sometimes used by doctors. I wonder how much prejudice these people would have to endure if it were known beforehand. Again, it seems all it really is, is a different structured brain to do the same job.

No institution can give absolute one on one care and engagement the way a family can. Mainstreaming gives exposure, interaction, societal norms and function. The need for communication is met by family and school.

In school as well as the military it is found out what a person has an aptitude for doing. That is where you start. Children with Autism do not like change but we can many times figure out what they have an aptitude for.

This is particularly true when you take into account that an obsession may be that same ‘aptitude’ that typical people show and look for. At this point what causes the problem whether chromosomes, genes, RNA, DNA is not known. What is more important is dealing with Autism itself.

Living, Feeling, Suffering

You can feel panic attacks suddenly in every situation in life and that’s why it so terrible. And very often you feel it in crowded paces, for example in the transport or airports.
