What is the future for Diabetes? It has become what is frequently being called “epidemic proportions”. But still there is great hope in a number of research breakthroughs that could slow, and even end this epidemic.

Have you ever heard of the difference between your body composition and your body mass index (otherwise known as your BMI)? Well, it’s not that complicated. Your BMI is calculated by a very complicated formula that we won’t go into here, and is based on nothing more than your height, your weight and your age and gender. Truth be known, age is not that big of a deal, but there is a commonly held belief in our society that older people are just supposed to be fatter. Don’t believe nonsense like that… you can be lean and mean no matter what your age. But what about this body composition thing?

Your body compositions is an extrapolation of the tradition that we humans have of comparing ourselves to other things. Certainly you’ve heard that women can have hourglass figures, and that men can have v-shaped backs. Some people have even suggested that the human body can be either apple or pear-shaped. If you’ve ever looked at those particular fruits, which rest somewhere far away from the string bean, you’ll notice that being called apple or pear-shaped is not exactly a compliment.

Your body composition ultimately comes down to the percentage of your body which is lean mass (such as bones, organs and muscles), versus how much of it is fat (which is just fat). There are no delineations between “types” of fat… they’re all just useless. It has been found Type 2 diabetics can also react to gluten not just people with known Celiac disease. This is really interesting as, worldwide wheat is regarded as the staff of life. Bread is eaten at every meal and between regular meals, and wheat flour is mixed with almost every other food.

Gluten is found in foods containing:

  • rye

About 1 in 100 people, however, has a severe reaction to the gliadin lectins in the gluten proteins that give wheat it’s ‘stretchability’. And there is a growing belief among scientists that activating the genes for gluten sensitivity, also known as Celiac disease, does not cause disease. Instead, Celiac disease activates the genes associated with it.

In full-blown Celiac disease, the “villi,” absorbing pockets lining the intestine, are destroyed by inflammatory processes. The destruction of the intestine keeps the toxic gliadin from entering the body.

The symptoms of Celiac disease occur after the immune system learns to recognize proteins in wheat and to attack them with a inflammatory substance known as interleukin-15. However, even people who do not develop severe symptoms of the disease, some scientists believe some people secrete smaller concentrations of this compound, just not enough to make them obviously sick.

In subclinical Celiac disease, the lining of the intestine is merely inflamed. This makes it far more permeable to glucose, and far more glucose enters the bloodstream after a meal. If you have Type 2 diabetes, see if your symptoms don’t get better if you avoid wheat for a period of two weeks. You don’t have to start reading labels. Just don’t eat bread made from whole wheat or white flour and don’t eat baked goods made with any kind of wheat. If you must eat bread, try the 100% rye bread you can get in the refrigerated section at most supermarkets… many people can tolerate rye but not wheat. Then, if you get an unexpected improvement in your blood sugar level control and the way you feel, try avoiding wheat products long-term. This method costs you nothing, and may leave you feeling much better.

There are lots of great foods to eat.

You can eat all the food that GROWS IN THE GROUND, that is, all the fruit and vegetables you can eat. Let your digestive system refine the food the natural way.

You can eat all the fish in the ocean but not have it battered or crumbed.

You must start an EXERCISE program that will include 20-30 minutes a day, six days a week. On the seventh day, walk to a church or synagogue and give thanks to your God.

You must eat 5 or 6 meals a day at regular intervals. There is one concession I will give you. You may include in your meals 10% of lean meal, grilled or roasted, never cooked in fat.

Consider using a small plate and change the portion size.
