Adjust Your Posture to Aid Digestion

It sounds bizarre, but if you suffer from any digestive problems such as heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, gas, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, or diarrhea, you could find that visiting a chiropractor can solve your problems. While diet and exercise can play a part in these digestive disorders, your posture and spinal alignment could contribute to these problems.

If you eat three meals a day, you should ideally have two or three bowel movements a day; otherwise waste is sitting for longer than necessary in your digestive tract and this could cause many health problems including toxicity, poor skin, body pain, bad breath, body odour, and, of course, poor digestion. Untreated digestive disorders can adversely affect your quality of life, your immune system, your social well-being, and your job productivity. Many of the traditional medicinal treatments for digestive problems include steroids or other medications that can have serious impacts on your body.

Scientific studies have proven that chiropractic care can allow the digestive system to work properly and can alleviate many of these problems, without resorting to medication. This is because chiropractors can make adjustments to the spine that allow the nervous system along the spine, (which affects the digestive function at several points), to function without any interference from the body or other organs. Chiropractors refer to interference with the nervous system as a subluxation or spinal joint mal-position. By correcting subluxations, chiropractors can restore the nervous system to enable proper communication between your nervous system and your digestive tract.

In 2008, author Dr. Larry S. Arbeitman, published a study that demonstrated how effective chiropractic care helped infants with digestive disturbances. Researchers studied infants who were experiencing infrequent bowel movements ranging from once a week to once every three or four days. Parents of these infants had tried different laxatives, the use of cod liver oil, and other dietary changes without any results. Every child experienced an immediate improvement with wellness-orientated chiropractic care and by the end of three months; each infant was experiencing daily bowel movements.

In another case study, a young woman who had been affected by irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for over five years, noticed an improvement after one adjustment. When the study was published two years after she had noticed the disappearance of all of her digestive symptoms, she was still symptom-free.

If you suffer from any recurring digestive tract disorders, especially constipation, IBS, excessive bloating, or acid reflux, you could find that your chiropractor can assist you by eliminating subluxations in your spinal nervous system and freeing your digestive system to work properly without interference.
